Free Photography Lessons, Part 2: Composition

I gladly offer this basic, 5-part series of photography lessons FOR FREE! Our world has become increasingly visual in the way we communicate. We not only take more pictures, we show them, send them and display them to more eyes than ever before. Wouldn’t it be nice to capture and show better pictures? In this series, I get us thinking about… 1. How to tell a story with our photographs by understanding the 4 dimensions associated with the art. 2. The basic elements of “composing” our photographic story. How do we put things in our viewfinders so people get the essence of that moment that inspired us. 3. Understanding exposure, light and color and how they combine to say what we want. 4. How lens choice and operation effects focus and how focus effects what we show in our photos 5. The people in our photographs and the people we are showing them to. Please enjoy these lessons. They’re not meant to be comprehensive and their not meant to be exhaustive or advanced. That doesn’t mean I don’t encourage any questions you might want to post for either me to try to answer or anyone else who comes along. Please, be kind, helpful and enjoy.

Continuing in my posts of my old game compositions, here’s one I wrote in September of 2008, for the same competition. The theme was to be sort of the final battle dungeon, and had the stipulation that it couldn’t use any time signature that was a multiple of 4: 4/4, 12/8, etc. So, this was my first real dive into odd time signatures, as well as using several rhythms in the same piece. The majority is in 7/8, with a few bits in 3/4, 11/8, and 6/8. Some of the piano and drum bits may be a little iffy, as I’ve never been much of a player on either instrument and wasn’t sure how to write for them. And again, if anybody stumbles upon these and would like to use them for anything, PLEASE don’t hesitate to send me a message about it, I just ask that I’m given credit, as even something old and sub-par is still something I wrote, and I’d hate to have my stuff plagiarized ever. Also, the cool picture here is from Shaggadelic on DeviantArt. You can find it here: shaggadelic.deviantart.com If I’m infringing anything by using it, please let me know. I simply looked for a picture that would show the kind of thing I’d envisioned when writing this piece. Enjoy! (hopefully…)
