Günter Wand Schubert Symphony No.5 Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Germany, 1997 NDR Sinfonieorchester the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra Günter Wand (19122002) made an imperative contribution not only to our understanding of Bruckner but also to that of Schubert as a symphonist. Both composers were particularly close to his heart and his international breakthrough came late in his life – with his highly-acclaimed Bruckner and Schubert recordings 1974-81. Video Rating: 4 / 5
Bruno Walter conducts the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, playing the ‘Unfinished Symphony’ (Unvollendete Sinfonie) of Schubert in B minor. 1. Allegro moderato Recorded March 3rd 1958
**THIS IS NOT ME PLAYING!!!** This is my band director’s son playing the 09-10 clarinet tryout music. (Just telling you so there’s no mix up). He has a Master’s in clarinet so that’s why he’s so pro. I uploaded this so that way all you clarinetists can hear how it goes for future reference. Enjoy and hope this is helpful! According to the label on the CD he gave me, this is Year D. The fast etude is Pg 56 #10, and the slow etude is Pg 34 #32. Video Rating: 5 / 5
Jean Sibelius: Andante festivo Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Mariss Jansons The ‘Andante festivo’ was written for string quartet in 1922 shortly before the Sixth Symphony. The composer later expanded it for string orchestra with ‘ad lib’ timpani, and on 1 January 1939 he conducted a performance in Helsinki for short-wave radio transmission to the World Exhibition in New York. This performance was preserved on wax as a poignant historical memento. It was the last time Sibelius conducted, and is the only known recorded exemple of his conducting. The noble, seamless melody is as close as he came to a religious statement. There are, in addition, intriguing suggestions of Dvorak’s Symphony ‘From the New World’ (or is it ‘God Save the Queen’?) and Sibelius’ own later Seventh Symphony, and an unmistakeable final ‘Amen’ cadence. Brahms was a master of musical structure, especially in his four symphonies, included together in this one-volume edition: No. 1 in C Minor, No. 2 in D Major, No. 3 in F Major, and No. 4 in E Minor.
One of the most thrilling musical experiences of my life was seeing Leonard Bernstein and the Chicago Symphony play Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony live. As Bernstein wrung every last ounce of pathos from the slow movement, I found it incredible that anyone could ever have thought this less than great music. The ending was so loud you could hardly even hear the cymbals! Happily, every bit of that experience–including the full dynamic range–has been captured on this recording, along wit
